Research Writer Interview With Liana

MBA / Business / Accounting / Family

I have always been an inquisitive child, spending many afternoons in the library, always wanting to acquire more knowledge, never satisfied with the last book. I was greedy, always wanting to know more. As an adult, this desire has not lessened all that much, although adult responsibilities have kept me from the careless afternoons of curled up with a good book. An experience that has had a large influence on my life has been the opportunity to attend college. Attending college was a significant adjustment as I had married and embarked on a family rather early in life. College required a major overhaul of my time-management techniques as the number of tasks that needed to be completed increased exponentially. However, I certainly enjoyed the journey I was on by attending Montclair State University and Marylhurst University.

I have acquired both a bachelor of science in accounting and a MBA in sustainable business throughout the years, while successfully raising a family. Now that my children are grown and on their own (YAY!), I have recaptured some of those lazy afternoons I spent as a child reading and learning.. As a degreed accountant and now with a MBA in sustainable business, I have developed a broad range of experience and a strong background in accounting, information technology and environmental studies which have been a defining experience in developing my professional career and outlook.

Being exposed to a variety of classes such as the humanities, art, and environmental science courses, in which we specifically studied differences in race, gender, and belief systems, had liberalized my world view and opened my mind to new experiences and cultures. I have gained a better appreciation for the merits of an education as I had come from an environment where education was not valued highly as I was one of the few people in my neighborhood to go to college. I had also learned to deal better with the disappointments and frustrations that result when things do not always go as one expects them to Being young and rather naïve at the time, I believed it would be easier than it was to be married with children while getting a college degree. I quickly found out that being smart was not enough, that dedication and perseverance are also attributes needed to success in college. I did use those attributes along with determination to obtain my bachelor of science degree in accounting after 5 years. Being quite a bit older when I obtained my MBA in sustainable business was definitely a bonus, as I have gotten a chance to experience more of life’s ups and down. I was able to put these experiences, as well as my strong interest in environmental issues to good use, as I found it much easier to absorb the knowledge in these courses.

I have an analytical mind, and very much enjoy the sciences. I tend to lean towards the sciences as my interest, science fiction and economics being two of my favorite subjects. While in school, researching on topics like sustainability and earth sciences was actually fun for me. I tend to be somewhat of an introvert these days, a complete opposite to my younger days. While I had always enjoyed being in school and doing well in my subjects and exams, I definitely did like the party scene. Now that I am older, I have reverted back to curling up in front of the fireplace with a good book as a most enjoyable day, seems like life has come full circle for me, in a good way.
